Penns Wood Winery is tasting room and vineyard estate is located in Chadds Ford . The Penns Woods Winery is located in Eddystone, Pa directly across the street from the owners Wine Import Company. The tasting room has a private back room for tastings (and this month wine and cupcake pairings), a bar and plenty of outdoor seating. The wine offerings are extensive so I will break them up into two posts, one white and one red.
The white wine is listed in the order they were tasted.
Traminette 2012 - A new release from Penns Wood this wine is made from the hybrid grape traminette. The front palate has drizzled honey and sweet notes which carries into the the mid palate. The finish has a touch of acid and a light finish. A sweet wine that lacks complexity yet is very easy drinking for those warm days. Retail price $22.
Sauvignon Blanc 2011 - This is a stainless steel Sav Blanc that has pear notes with hints of apple. Medium acidity and a decent finish. A standard sav blanc but the it is hard to justify the price to quality ratio. Retail $28.
Banscroft Riesling 2012 - Banscroft is the second label from Penns Wood that represents the more approachable wines. The 2012 Riesling has green apple notes, decent acidity and touches of sweetness. Retail $19
Chardonnay Reserve 2011 - The front palate has notes of bright fruit but the mid palate and finish are over powered by the oak. The finish leaves a mouth feel of toasted oak. A very average chardonnay offering. Retail $22.
White Merlot 2012 - Light red fruit on the front palate. The mid palate has a touch of sweetness with subtle pineapple notes. The finish lacks complexity but this is an easy drinking wine. Retail $22. This wine was not as bottle aged so a few more months in bottle before opening may benefit the wine.
Banscroft Moscato - The front palate shows grapefruit and honeysuckle. The wine is not syrupy like many other sweet wines. The wine has a bright and natural sweetness at the finish. A great representation of a dessert style wine that does not taste like medicine. Retail $19.
Penns Wood a diverse offering of white wines with many being very approachable.
